The CHOICE network is a Microsoft Wi-Fi network access implementation that globally authenticates users and then securely connects them to the Internet via a high-speed local area wireless network?a "hot spot." This network technology provides easy-to-use, individual-centric, service-oriented wireless Internet access in places other than the traditional corporate offices and homes. The architecture is hardware and protocol agnostic and is built on an easily deployable software module called the Protocol for Authorization and Negotiation of Services, or PANS. The CHOICE technology provides a development platform for licensees to deploy complementary or competitive services that can target wireless users using Microsoft patented technology.

The CHOICE IP package includes rights to applicable Microsoft intellectual property, including numerous patents, documentation, source and object code, and other ancillary materials. Of particular interest are the offered rights to the issued and pending patents; many of them are considered essential patents in the context of any Wi-Fi hot-spot scenario.
