What's New in Silverlight 3

Download Presentation

Silverlight 3 promises a new wealth of functionality around its traditional strengths of graphics, user interface and multi-media for rich internet applications. New features include H.264 video support, "3D" support, "hardware acceleration" and new application development features. In this session, we'll take a good look at all of the bg features coming in Silverlight 3 dropping down into code and demos wherever it makes sense to illustrate the core concepts that make up the new functionality. Expect to see XAML, code and the highlights of what makes Silverlight 3 an exciting release for developers of browser-based applications. If you don't build for the browser then come along anyway - you might go away wanting to build with Silverlight 3 anyway :-)

Throwing Client Collaboration Out the Window: The Stalinist Web Design Model

Web designers and agencies of all sizes almost universally promote themselves as agreeable team players in a collaborative partnership. But what happens when you throw that practice out the window and adopt a process that isn’t a collaborative creation, a model where you don’t give the client choices, and a project management style where you constantly say No to the customer? Sabrina Dent argues that the clients are just as happy, the end users are better off, and the design and build takes less time with fewer tears.

ASP.NET and MVC

ASP.NET MVC is a fairly new web application framework that allows the developer to very close to what the web can offer you.
Daniel is going to take you back in time to see what the differences are, from the good old ASP classic days, to ASP.NET webforms, to Microsoft’s latest ASP.NET framework.
You will get a feeling of how MVC works, and why you should use it.  There will be some code for you to take home and work on.

Introduction to the Azure Services Platform

Download Presentation

The Azure Services Platform is designed to help developers quickly and easily create, deploy, manage, and distribute Web services and applications on the Internet. Windows Azure is a cloud services operating system that serves as the development, service hosting, and service management environment for the Azure Services Platform. It provides developers with on-demand compute and storage to host, scale, and manage Web applications on the Internet through Microsoft data centers. This is an introductory session for developers who are interested in targeting the Azure Platform.

The Challenge of Silverlight Architectures (300 level)
Silverlight represents a sweet spot between rich client WPF and WinForms applications and the ease of web deployment. Now that .NET code runs on the browser client, we’re confronted with the many differences between the two versions of the CLR. A valid question arises about what code should run on the client. This talk looks at the mechanics of the problem – how to reuse code across the two platforms, how to pass data between the platforms, and how to support databinding. Then it launches into issues of validation, authorization and calculations. You’ll see a DTO (Data Transfer Object) approach and understand the alternative mobile object solution and touch on some of the great support for visualizing data using the Visual State Manager. This talk presents Silverlight from the perspective of a rich client programmer demanding all the functionality and ease of coding inherent in the stateful, intelligent Silverlight model.

Guerrilla Web Strategy: Don’t let budget impede effective user experience

Download Presentation

Typically freelance designers, small studios (and even bigger ones), do not have clients who see value in paying for a 'discovery and planning stage' - but you can't develop effective, user centric web experiences without it. Leeanne will offer strategies for ensuring this key stage happens in a meaningful way, and a framework for how to do it (no matter how small the project budget).

Where Next with Windows Azure: Storage and even PHP with Azure!

Windows Azure is Microsoft’s cloud based operating system. With Azure you can host different types of web applications, plug into a broad suite of services, save data and a lot more.
Daniel has build a small solution that shows how the storage model in Windows Azure works and at the same time how you can use the Microsoft technology stack to interact with this model. Azure offers PHP hosting via FastCGI and Daniel will briefly show you how that works.
