Microsoft TechNet Biweekly Newsletter

From the Editor
You'll notice some changes to the Microsoft Ireland TechNet website over the next few weeks. The first major change is that we'll be conducting a survey to make sure that the content we're supplying both from the website and in the TechNet Flash newsletter is relevant and valuable. We're also going to look at the importance of having local Irish content. There are over 70,000 IT professionals working in Ireland and we would like to hear from you.

In the next edition of TechNet Flash we'll add the link to the survey and simply by answering a few multiple choice questions you'll be entered into a draw to win one of two top-of-the-line laptops - can't say fairer than that!

In upcoming editions, we'll also feature articles from our readers. So, if you think you've got the inside track on a topic that you think will appeal to your peers send it in. Mike Hughes, a colleague of mine, is supporting me on this piece of work so send your comments to him. Every article we choose to feature either in the blog, in TechNet Flash or on the site will win the author two vouchers for a restaurant of their choice in the locale of their choice.

Two things to watch out for this week are the release of Windows Vista SP1 to TechNet subscribers and the release of the feature-complete CTP release of SQL Server 2008.

Ten-times more applications have 'certified' or 'works with' Windows Vista logos than at launch and there is support for an additional 700K devices - making it the most supported OS ever.

Highlights include:

Significant reliability improvements - measurable file copy performance (25-50 per cent faster) speedier resume times and reduced hangs and crashes

Even greater security - Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption in Windows Vista Ultimate now encrypts all local drives and enables simultaneous authentication

Capabilities to further simplify system administration - simplified remote access, easier use of Terminal Server and Virtual PC, and improved self help tools and network diagnostics.

Thank you for reading - until next time.
