In this week's issue:

Economy, Security Resources, Desktop Deployment Seminar, Community Events and Meetings, Cool T-Shirt give-away!

Dear Enda,

It's December already and I actually haven't used the 'R' word to date in this newsletter - which I personally think is good going! With Christmas fast approaching, and all the media coverage continuing to focus on the credit crunch and cost-saving shopping trips to the North, I feel nauseous every time I turn on the radio! Job losses, negative property equity and belt-tightening - it's tough going.

With the newsletter packed with all the good stuff coming your way from Microsoft, there has been little time or space to dwell on the downturn, perhaps? This week, without labouring the topic, I wanted to share some practical cost-saving pointers which I hope you will find to be refreshing amidst all the 'R' hype. We have all felt the impact of the trading downturn in different ways; less money being spent, less credit available, and for us in IT, limited budgets and resources. As well as showing the significant role IT can play in these times, you can also learn about the importance of leveraging IT investments you have already made. Doing more with less is the name of the game.

Wrapping this edition up..I am giving away possibly the coolest and geekiest stocking-filler an IT Pro can ask for this Christmas! It's true, I have a Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt up for grabs - the ultimate in geek chic attire (as tastefully modelled below by my colleague Will). See http://www.firebox.com/product/2058/Wi-Fi-Detecting-T-Shirt to source your own.

Be sure to attend to get your request for a meeting topic, as there is likely to be a strawpoll done on the night.

With the recent launch of Small Business Server 2008 - which is packed with great new features - the Windows User group is going to an SBS 2008 special update at its January meeting. The provisional date is January 15th. Please see : http://ws-ugi.spaces.live.com for final details on timings and location.

Note the Windows Server User Group has be rebranded as the 'Windows User Group' - this has been done for two reasons:

Watch this space in future editions for news of forthcoming User Group meetings...additional local User Groups are planned to launch in the coming months too!

Feature Article

An update is available that integrates Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 into Server Manager in Windows Server 2008

The Server Manager snap-in is a new feature in Windows Server 2008 that guides administrators through installing, configuring, and managing Windows Server 2008 roles and features. For more information about Server Manager, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/servermanagement.mspx

By default, Windows Server 2008 includes several server roles. Server Manager enables integration of additional roles and features that are available from the Microsoft Download Center and from Windows Update Web sites as optional updates to Windows Server 2008. One role that is available as an update is Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 with Service Pack 1 (SP1). This update for Server Manager in Windows Server 2008 fully integrates WSUS 3.0 SP1 into Server Manager. This update lets you use the Server Manager snap-in and wizards to install, configure, and manage WSUS 3.0 SP1.

If you do not plan to install WSUS 3.0 SP1, do not apply this update. If WSUS 3.0 SP1 is already installed on the computer, this update lets you use Server Manager to manage WSUS.
