Microsoft Partner Solutions for SAP News Update

Dear Partners,

With two very successful SAPPHIRES now under our belt, I am very excited by the opportunities for Microsoft partners in the SAP space. These are indeed exciting times for all of us.

Duet was the common theme that customers wanted to hear about on both sides of the Atlantic. Fueled by the Duet roadmap announcement made at SAPPHIRE in Atlanta, the customer interest was overwhelming. As ISVs that is your cue to develop your own Office Business Applications (OBA) – that is, applications that take advantage of Microsoft Office as a user interface. Microsoft recently launched Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO). This tool set will empower you to build the OBAs that customers are expecting. Read more about OBAs and VSTO below.

At SAPPHIRE we also hosted the first-ever Partner Advisory Council (PAC) for Microsoft Partners extending SAP. The meeting was very effective in soliciting partner feedback on Microsoft priorities for the next fiscal year. You should consider the PAC you voice into Microsoft. If you are interested in participating in future PACs, please send an email message to stigp@microsoft.com.

One piece of feedback from the PAC was that these News Updates are valuable. Therefore, you will keep receiving them. Happy reading.

Best regards,
Stig Panduro
Sr. Business Development Manager

Duet Partnership Announced
At SAPPHIRE 2007, Jeff Raikes, president of the Microsoft Business Division, joined Leo Apotheker, deputy CEO of SAP, to share the extended product roadmap for Duet software. This is a solution that allows information workers to interact with SAP business processes and data through Microsoft Office applications, including SharePoint. In versions 2.0 -- planned for 2008 – and 3.0 – planned for after the next generations of Microsoft Office and SAP Business Suite -- both companies plan to enhance Duet with additional business scenarios, platform capabilities, and development tools. These releases will deliver additional high-value business scenarios, enhanced informational insight, and collaboration with integration with Microsoft business productivity platform (SharePoint), advanced infrastructure and tools capabilities. Take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/sap for more details. As ISVs, you can build your own OBA using Visual Studio Tools for Office. Visit http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/office/aa905533.aspx to see blogs about OBA, learn more about the tools, and view code samples.

Jeff Raikes Discusses the Significance of the Duet Announcement
Jeff Raikes spent some time answering questions about the Duet announcement. For the full interview, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2007/apr07/04-24RaikesDuet.mspx.

Here is an excerpt from that interview:

What is significant about today’s Duet announcement from Microsoft and SAP?
Raikes: When we first set out with SAP to create and deliver the Duet product, we had aspirations of great things. Our customers share our excitement around the potential impact from Duet and today’s announcement signifies the long-term commitment that Microsoft and SAP have made for Duet. Together we’re both expanding the functionality of Duet as well as transforming Duet from being just an application to an application that is very extendable, allowing customers and partners to customize and enhance Duet to best meet the needs of their business.

“Duet by SAP and Microsoft, powered by HP” Announced
Also announced at SAPPHIRE 2007 was “Duet by SAP and Microsoft, powered by HP.” Developed jointly by SAP, Microsoft, and HP, this new appliance is an HP ProLiant server that has been preinstalled with Duet software. The appliance allows customers to easily create a “proof of concept,” enabling them to more quickly and easily evaluate Duet’s business benefits using customer-specific data. Preloaded scripts have been engineered to help customers jump-start the Duet proof-of-concept and production implementations. The Duet appliance speeds up deployment by shortening implementation time from setup to configuration, which both increases return on investment and enables customers to realize business benefits from Duet more quickly. SAP and Microsoft Make Migration to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Easier
Also announced at SAPPHIRE 07 was an agreement between Microsoft and SAP to jointly develop a solution that will simplify and accelerate customer adoption of SQL Server 2005 and optimize it for the SAP Business Suite. This provides customers with a way to lower total cost of ownership, take advantage of existing expertise within their organization, and benefit from the long-standing relationship between SAP and Microsoft to enhance the business performance of their SAP and non-SAP applications. This announcement will help make it easier for non-SQL Server customers to unlock the value of SAP ERP on SQL Server 2005 by reducing the risk and cost of migration from competitive database offerings. For information on this agreement and solution, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/isv/sap/.

At SAPPHIRE '07 Vienna today, SAP and Microsoft announced an agreement on a joint offering that will simplify and accelerate customer adoption of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and optimize it for the SAP Business Suite. The new offering will enable customers to easily transition to SQL Server 2005 and take advantage of the benefits of a flexible, enterprise, service-oriented architecture to transform their businesses. SAP and Microsoft have also agreed to set up a joint lab in Walldorf, Germany, to further optimize SAP Business Suite on SQL Server 2005. Read the full announcement.
