
OPOS-J under the Smarter Retailing Initiative along with .NET Retail System Initiative and Smarter Retailing Forum, an open forum will roll out various activities in the retail environment. Smarter Retailing Forum will hold an open seminar twice to four times a year and send out information to enlighten "Smarter Retailing" to the retail business market.

| The goals of OPOS-J |
OPOS-J is a technology council, its objective is to create an open and diverse POS terminal and to improve the productivity of POS application development. OPOS-J works closely with OPOS working group in United States and Europe, also with UPOS of NRF-ARTS, to implement Japan local POS peripherals specification to the international specifications. OPOS-J also contributes in diffusion of the established specifications.
OPOS-J has established various standard specifications for interface of POS peripherals and applications. Though this process OPOS-J have accomplished standardizing the interface of POS hardware and software which was different between each vendors and made the application porting and reconfiguration of hardware much easier.
OPOS-J issues the Japanese version of the international standard specifications. This specification is evolving time to time and almost all interface specification of the devices used with POS terminals are included in the spec. E-Cash and other various addition was done for the current specification 1.9.

With the internet technology emerging, OPOS-J's next goal is to create a standard for next generation POS systems which is part of the ".NET Retail System Model". The new standard "OPOS for .NET" will aspire the following theme to come true;
