An essential 21st Century skill is
the ability to build and foster communities in both
the virtual and real world. Twenty-first century
schools and institutions make best use of these
communities and are able to identify, assess, and
then communicate relevant information amongst
themselves and to their wider world. Like most
competencies, the art of making connections must be
learned.
Microsoft, with educational institutions and
industry partners, helps to connect students,
educators, and school leaders to each other and to
the outside community through sponsored programs
like The Spoke, the Learning Essentials Community,
and our Partner Marketplace. |
| |
 |
 |
Students
Students need a place to call their own,
and nowhere is this more important than in
education. Student communities are an
essential part of the educational
experience, because they allow like-minded
individuals to share aspects of themselves
that they’d never reveal to an educator or
parent. They also help each other learn new
things connected and not connected to the
learning experience, from cutting-edge
technologies to fashionable trends in music,
gaming, culture and more.
|
|
 |
Educators
The most inspiring educators all know the
same thing: in order to teach, you must
first learn. The most effective way of
continuing this process throughout a
teaching career is in connecting educators
to each other in collaborative communities
through the right network of technologies
and solutions. In doing so, educators can
learn from each other on best practices,
solve real-world problems, and learn how to
create an inspirational environment for
learning, no matter the constraints of time
or money.
Programs and communities uniquely suited for
educators can be found here. |
 |
| Communities like Microsoft’s
Innovative Teachers Network, encourages
educators to share information, and the Peer
Coaching program provides training on how
educators can become technology leaders in
their own schools. |

practices, innovation and
pedagogy, to provide free,
high quality classroom
instructional content, to
provide professional
development and access to
technology resources, and to
promote teacher confidence
in integrating technology
throughout the learning
process. The network was
developed in partnership
with Microsoft Spain and
Fundación Telefónica. As of
May 2007 around 4,000
Innovative teachers have
registered in the Innovative
Teachers Network (ITN)

Since 2006
Costa Rica has
developed the Innovative
Teachers Network (ITN)
portal with over 500
registered users. Costa
Rica’s ITN is one of five
countries worldwide
migrating to 2.0 version
through which they will have
access to dozens of portals
around the globe with access
to digital content produced
by colleagues throughout the
world. This version of ITN
will be publicly launched
August 2007 with more than
5,000 teachers joining the
portal in the first phase.
In Partnership with the
Ministry of Education the
ITN
www.docentesinnovadores.mep.go.cr,
includes all the digital
content for subjects such as
math, language, reading,
values commission, etc, as
well as access to content
from other countries.
Teachers and students are
also learning innovative
uses of technology such as
Digital Story Telling. The
ITN allows teachers to
collaborate, interact, share
best practices and use
digital content developed by
other colleagues resulting
in improved education and
more student engagement. |
