Installing Messenger for Mac 7

Messenger for Mac 7 does not include tools for automated installations across a network. To install Messenger for Mac 7, use one of the following options:

  • Install from a software distribution point  To deploy Messenger to your organization, you can download the installation image to a central location, such as the network file server. Then users can drag the installation image to their computers and install Messenger. Choose this method if you want to control what applications your users download and install on their computers.

  • Install by downloading to each client  Users can also download Messenger directly from the Microsoft Web siteClick this link to open a browser window. .

To establish a standard set of preferences for users, you can customize the preferences for Messenger for Mac 7. For example, you can customize the preferences for setting a range of ports for audio/video sessions in the preference file com.microsoft.Messenger.rtc.plist. This file is located in /Users/username/Library/Preferences. After you set the preferences, you can deploy them at a later time. For more information on how to set the range of ports for audio/video sessions, see Setting audio/video preferences. For more information about how to deploy preferences, see Deploying Messenger for Mac 7 preferences in the Post-Installation section. Before users install Messenger, make sure that they have the following information to successfully set up Messenger for Mac 7.

  • Corporate account information for Active Directory. This includes the company e-mail address, domain name, user name or e-mail name, and password.

  • For automatic configuration of network settings, a Domain Name System server (DNS SRV) resource record for the deployment. With automatic configuration enabled, the client automatically queries for DNS SRV resource record. The client either connects directly or is redirected to the correct Office Communications Server. For instructions about how to create a DNS SRV resource record for the Office Communications Server deployment and more information about automatic configuration, see the Office Communications Server 2007Click this link to open a browser window. documentation.

  • For manual configuration of network settings, the IP address or fully qualified domain name of the Office Communications Server and whether users should use Transport Connection Protocol (TCP) or Transport Layer Security (TLS).

Note On a corporate network, you can prevent use of a personal account in Messenger for Mac. To disable connectivity with the Windows Live Messenger service, close the ports in the corporate firewall on which incoming network communication is received for the service. Port 1863 is the primary port that is used for the Windows Live Messenger service.

Installing from a software distribution point

You can perform the following steps to install Messenger for Mac from a central location.

Step 1: Download the installation image to a central location
  1. On the DownloadsClick this link to open a browser window. page of microsoft.com/mac, click Messenger, and then click the version that you want.

  2. Click the language that you want, and then click Save to save the downloadable .dmg file to the central network location for file sharing.

  3. Set the user permissions for the network file share to allow authorized users to access the shared folder. For more information about how to set permissions, see your server documentation.

Step 2: Install from the central file location to client computers

Users can install Messenger on their computers by performing the following steps.

  1. Double-click the .dmg file on the central file sharing location.

  2. To copy Messenger for Mac to your hard disk, drag the Microsoft Messenger icon to the Applications folder.

  3. To start the Setup Assistant, double-click the Microsoft Messenger application that you copied to your hard disk.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  5. When you are asked to enter the corporate account details, enter the Active Directory account information. This includes the company e-mail address, domain name, user name or e-mail name, and password.

Step 3: Manually configure connection to the Office Communications Server

Note Users should perform the following procedure only if the connection to the Office Communications Server is not automatically configured after users run the Setup Assistant. Users have to have the IP address or name of the server.

When automatic configuration is selected, Messenger for Mac uses the TLS protocol. The TCP protocol might appear to be selected, but is actually using the TLS protocol. If TLS is unavailable, Messenger for Mac uses the TCP protocol.

  1. On the Messenger menu, click Preferences, click Accounts, and then click the Corporate tab.

  2. Under My Network Settings, click Manually configure settings.

  3. Type the IP address or the fully qualified domain name of the Office Communications Server.

  4. Click TCP or TLS, and then click OK.

Installing by downloading to each client

If users are downloading directly from the Microsoft Web siteClick this link to open a browser window. site, they should perform the following steps to install Messenger for Mac 7.

  1. On the DownloadsClick this link to open a browser window. page of microsoft.com/mac, click Messenger, and then click the version that you want.

  2. Click the language that you want.

  3. Do one of the following:

    If you are using

    Click

    Safari

    Continue to save the file.

    Mozilla Firefox

    Save File to save the file.

    Note If you are using Safari, the downloaded file is saved to the desktop unless you specified a different location in the Preferences dialog box of Safari. To check your preferences, on the Safari menu, click Preferences, and then click General.

  4. If the file that you downloaded does not expand automatically, on your hard disk, double-click the file that you downloaded in step 2.

  5. To copy Messenger for Mac to your hard disk, drag the Microsoft Messenger icon to the Applications folder.

  6. To start the Setup Assistant, double-click the Microsoft Messenger application that you copied to your hard disk.

  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  8. When you are asked to enter the corporate account details, enter the Active Directory account information. This includes the company e-mail address, domain name, user name or e-mail name, and password.

Your feedback was not submitted because the network connection was lost. Verify that you have an Internet connection, and then try submitting your feedback.
