Troubleshooting Your Web Page: Removing Headers and Footers from a Printed Page

I don't want headers and footers appearing on a printed page.

Source of the Problem

After you have created your Web site, you may want to print it out to give to customers and clients. When you print out the pages, header and footer information about the Web page, its location, and content appears at the top and bottom of your page. Some companies use their Web pages as marketing materials and don't want header and footer code distracting from a well planned and executed design.

How to Fix It

1.

Using Microsoft Internet Explorer, open the page you would like to print out. You can type the URL in the Address bar, or, if the page is saved on your computer, click File and select Open. In the dialog box, click Browse to navigate to the file you want to print. When you have found and selected the page you would like to print, it will appear in the Open field. Click OK to display the page in the browser.

2.

Confirm that you have opened the page you would like to print. Click File and select Page Setup. You will see four sections in the dialog box that appears. In the second section from the top, Headers and Footers, there are two fields: Header and Footer (Figure 1).

3.

Clear the text in both fields, and click Printer to go to the printer dialog box. You can now print your page without header and footer information. Alternatively, you can click OK to save your changes after clearing the text from both fields, and later click Print from the File menu to print your page.

Tip: Many Web pages are oriented horizontally because of the shape of monitors and browsers. It may be easier to print your page horizontally. Click the Landscape radio button in the Orientation section of the dialog box to print your page horizontally.

Tip: In the Page Setup dialog box, you can also adjust the margins of your page if you need more horizontal or vertical space.
