This exam validates the skills needed to pre-install Microsoft Operating Systems in an OEM environment.
Audience ProfileCandidates for this exam are IT professionals who use the Microsoft OEM Pre-Installation Kit (OPK) and imaging tools to deploy and maintain Windows Vista desktops and Microsoft Office 2007.  Candidates should have a minimum of one year of experience managing day-to-day issues involving desktop and server image deployments. Candidates should be familiar with Microsoft best practices for using the OPK.

Preparing the OEM Pre-Installation Kit (OPK) Environment
  • Prepare the OPK environment to meet minimum system requirements.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: preparing the technician machine and server to ensure hardware requirements are met, ensuring the network environment is functional
  • Install and configure the OPK.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: installing the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, installing the XML Core Services 6.0 or later, installing the OPK, defining folder share properties, configuring the technician computer
  • Troubleshoot the OPK environment.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: network environment, permissions, driver issues, WinPE 2.0 bootable environment, third-party applications
Creating and Modifying Configuration Sets
  • Create and modify an answer file by using Windows System Image Manager.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: adding, modifying, and removing Windows components; defining workgroup settings, defining disk configuration
  • Insert branding information, support information, and promotional content.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: inserting branding information such as logos; support information, such as phone numbers, Web sites, hours of operation, and model names; promotional content such as upgrade options and service options
  • Add drivers.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: adding mass storage drivers, network card drivers, and video drivers
  • Configure Windows Pre-Installation Environment (WinPE 2.x).
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: configuring drives, network card drivers, target computer settings, mass storage driver, copying additional tools to the environment
  • Install Windows updates, service packs, and hotfixes.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: running Windows Update, installing service packs, installing hotfixes
  • Install Office 2007 Activation Assistant, Office 2007 Demo, and third-party applications.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: installing Office 2007 Activation Assistant, installing Office 2007 Demo in unattended mode, installing third-party applications
  • Ensure that OEM licensing requirements are met.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: verifying that certificate authenticity is properly displayed, correct licensing policies were followed, and system was resealed prior to delivery
Capturing and Auditing Images
  • Capture an image.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: selecting an image capture tool such as ImageX or WDS, capturing an image, generalizing an image by using the SysPrep tool
  • Audit an image by using the SysPrep utility.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: opening an existing image to make modifications to the image
Deploying and Testing Images
  • Select deployment methods and tools.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: selecting deployment methods and tools such as ImageX, WDS, DVDs with external media, USB keys, multicast packets with WDS, third-party tools
  • Deploy images.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: using various techniques to deploy images, such as using a WIM or RIS image file through WDS by using the PXE client, using a DVD with an answer file, deploying images manually through a network connection by using WinPE, using third-party deployment options
  • Test image deployment and out-of-box experience (OOBE).
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: simulating the end-user experience, confirming proper functionality of the OOBE, verifying that proper client configuration, OEM licensing compliance, and branding is implemented
  • Troubleshoot image deployment.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: troubleshooting image deployment issues such as missing drivers, missing programs, boot issues, error messages, incorrect network configurations, and third-party application configurations
Performing Image Maintenance on Existing Images
  • Install new service packs and Windows updates on existing images as required.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: running Windows Update to update existing images, applying service packs to existing images, using service pack maintenance tools such as VSP1CLN.exe, resealing existing images
  • Apply third-party updates and hotfixes on existing images as required.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: demonstrating knowledge of why it is important to do this to maintain existing images, applying updates to database or line-of-business applications, updating malware applications prior to reseal
  • Back up images and configuration sets to an external source.
    • This objective may include but is not limited to: using industry best practices for back up, including back up to external hard drives, tape drives, DVDs, or network-attached storage devices
