About This Clinic
This half-day, instructor-led clinic provides students with the knowledge and skills to successfully implement Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) in medium- and large-scale environments. It provides information about the new security features included in SP2 and discusses how those changes may impact end users. The clinic also shows how SP2 can be deployed in an enterprise environment, how to prepare for deployment and how to manage SP2 after installation.

Audience Profile
This clinic is intended for systems administrators and systems engineers that are implementing Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 network environments with Windows XP as the desktop operating system. It is intended for experienced information technology professionals who need the specific details of how they can deploy Service Pack 2, what additional tools will be available for managing a Windows XP SP2 desktop, and how it will impact end users.

This session shows how Windows XP Service Pack 2 with Advanced Security Technologies provides many improvements to the security of Windows XP. This session describes how networking security is enhanced through Windows Firewall, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) restrictions and DCOM improvements; how application memory is protected by the “no execute (NX)” feature; how browsing is made more secure through new Internet Explorer components; and how e-mail security is increased through Outlook Express enhancements.

Module 2: Deploying and Managing Windows XP Service Pack 2
This session discusses how to plan and implement a successful SP2 deployment. The session describes the steps necessary for preparing a Windows XP SP2 deployment, and explains various setup and installation scenarios for SP2. Additionally, the session explains how to manage networking and communications in SP2; how to use Group Policy to manage various features of SP2; and how to remove SP2 from computers.

Module 3: Hands-On Lab 2852: Deploying and Administering Windows XP Service Pack 2
Hands-On Lab 2852 consists of two 90-minute classroom-based labs that accompany Clinic 2851 to provide IT professionals with an opportunity to perform relevant tasks in a safe, real-world environment.

These hands-on labs will provide the student with experience in:
  • How to use Security Center to ensure that a computer is up to date and protected.
  • How to use Windows Firewall to protect a computer on the network.
  • How to use the new security enhancements in Internet Explorer to browse more securely on the Internet.
  • Understanding the different methods to deploy Service Pack 2 on your network.
  • How to configure Windows Firewall settings after installation of Service Pack 2.
  • How to manage the new security features in Service Pack 2 by using domain-based Group Policy.

Before attending this course, students must have:
  • Experience managing Windows XP Professional desktops.
  • An understanding of the deployment tools that are used to deploy Windows XP and updates to the desktop.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 management tools.
  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory and Group Policy.
