About this Course
This one-day instructor-led course provides students with the knowledge and skills to install and implement the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Data Migration Pack. This course addresses the components involved in planning a data migration project, the installation of the Data Migration Pack, preparing Microsoft CRM for data migration, components of the Data Migration Pack, initialization and structure of the CDF database, loading source data into the CDF database, cleansing the data, and then migrating the data into Microsoft CRM.
The course reviews the migration tools contained within the Data Migration Framework for migrating data:
  • CDF Initialization Wizard
  • CDF Data Mapping Wizard
  • CDF Migration Wizard
The course also examines the planning tools included in the Data Migration Pack that drive the data migration planning process. These include:
  • Detailed Data Planning spreadsheet for mapping source data schema to Microsoft CRM
  • Source Data Assessment spreadsheet for documenting overview information for the source data
  • Data Mapping spreadsheets with predefined mappings for ACT!, Goldmine, and Siebel databases
This course does not include materials or instructor discussion of Microsoft CRM Integration for Great Plains.
Audience Profile
Microsoft CRM 3.0 Data Migration training is recommended for people who plan to install, implement, configure, consult, or support Microsoft CRM 3.0. The class is targeted toward administrators, implementers, developers, and consultants who need to understand how to use the Data Migration Pack for migrating source application data into Microsoft CRM. The course is not intended for non-technical staff.
At Course Completion
After completing this course, students will be able to:
  • Plan each of the components of a Data Migration project
  • Prepare Microsoft CRM for data migration
  • Use the Data Migration Framework planning documents to map the source data schema to Microsoft CRM schema
  • Identify the schema structure of the staging database, known as the Common Data Format (CDF) database
  • Initialize the (CDF) database
  • Populate the CDF database with source data
  • Cleanse source data in the CDF database, which includes:
  • Verify that required attributes have data
  • Merge duplicates and associate data
  • Cleanse state and status data
  • Perform general data cleansing tasks
  • Perform a test migration of selected source data entities from the CDF database into the Microsoft CRM database
  • Perform a full migration of source data entities from the CDF database into the Microsoft CRM database
  • Validate the data migration was successful

Lab : Mapping Data
  • This lab asks each student to restore a backup of a customer's source database, and map source data into Microsoft CRM Account and Contact entities.
  • Students will use the Data Migration Pack's Detailed Data Planning spreadsheet to map the entities. Mapping of the Account entity is provided as an example; students will be required to map the Contact entity.
After completing this module, students will be able to:
  • Identify key best practices to follow in data migration planning
  • Determine the skills necessary to manage a data migration project
  • Identify the challenges management faces when planning and executing a data migration
  • Determine the approaches, techniques, and key knowledge areas that guarantee a successful data migration project

Module 2: Installing the Data Migration Pack
This chapter examines the hardware and software requirements that must be in place prior to installing the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Data Migration Pack

Lab : Installing the Data Migration Pack
  • This lab asks each student to install the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Data Migration Pack within a virtual PC environment, and then confirm that the installation was successful.
Lab : Installing the Data Migration Pack
  • This lab asks each student to prepare Microsoft CRM for data migration. This includes importing customizations required in the lab scenario, backing up databases, pausing workflows and sales processes.
After completing this chapter, students will be able to:
  • Install the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Data Migration Pack
  • Identify the Data Migration Framework tools
  • Identify the steps that are required to prepare Microsoft CRM for data migration
  • Set up the source database for the Data Migration Wizard for Outlook with Business Contact Manager
Module 3: Loading Source Data into the CDF Database
This chapter examines the steps involved in initializing and loading source data into the Common Data Format (CDF) database, and the necessary information needed to complete these steps.

Lab : CDF Initialization
  • This lab asks each student to first run a series of SQL queries against key tables in the CDF database. Then students run the CDF Initialization Wizard to initialize the CDF database. Following this, students re-run the same set of queries to see the changes made to the database by the Initialization wizard.
Lab : CDF Data Load
  • This lab asks each student to load a set of Accounts and Contacts into the CDF database. These accounts and contacts will be cleansed and migrated into Microsoft CRM in later chapters. In this lab, students will create unique integer primary keys for the Account and Contact CDF tables, add a custom attribute to the Contact table, create a set of SQL views that will be used to facilitate data loading, and run a series of SQL scripts to load the accounts and contacts into the CDF database and maintain their data relationships.
After completing this chapter, students will be able to:
  • Identify the entity tables in the CDF database in which to load the source data
  • Use the Microsoft CRM Correlation tables
  • Identify the entities that can be migrated into Microsoft CRM
  • Initialize the CDF database before loading it with data
  • Load data for each attribute type into the CDF database
  • Maintain data relationships
Module 4: Cleansing Data in the CDF Database
This chapter discusses best practices to follow when cleansing source data that has been loaded into the CDF database. It also examines how to use the Data Migration Framework's CDF Data Mapping Wizard to cleanse territories, user accounts, and drop-down list values.

  • Identify stored procedures that help in data cleansing operation
Module 5: Migrating Data into Microsoft CRM
This chapter explains what tasks the CDF Migration Wizard performs when it migrates data from the CDF database into Microsoft CRM. It also provides step-by-step procedures for running the wizard and troubleshooting potential migration problems.

Lab : Running a Test Migration
  • This lab asks each student to run a test migration on a sample set of Account and Contact data to make sure the data migration will succeed. Students will be asked to complete the steps required to run a migration.
Lab : Running a Full Migration
  • Once students verified in the prior lab that the test migration succeeded, they will run a Full migration to load all of the Account and Contact records into Microsoft CRM. This will require that each student restore the databases which they backed up in the prior lab, run the full migration, and then verify their results.
After completing this chapter, students will be able to:
  • Identify each of the tasks performed by the CDF Migration Wizard
  • Identify what the correlation phase of the migration does
  • Identify the requirements that must be satisfied for the correlation phase of the migration to succeed
  • Understand how the CDF database is updated as each record is migrated into Microsoft CRM
  • Understand how relationships between records are maintained when the data is migrated into Microsoft CRM
  • Set up and run a test migration
  • Run a full migration
  • Troubleshoot data migration problems
Before attending this course, students must have a working knowledge of Microsoft( Windows Server 2000, 2003, or Windows XP, and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or 2005. Students should also be proficient in installing, configuring, and customizing Microsoft CRM 3.0.
