Simulation Technology

A Revolutionary New Way to Assess Real-World Skills

We are delighted to introduce simulation technology into our testing methodology. Certification exams will now feature a combination of traditional test items and simulated work environments where candidates will demonstrate their skills by performing critical IT tasks.

Enhancing the Core Value of Microsoft Certification

Our continuing commitment to MCP certifications is to ensure that they're the most relevant and valuable credentials in the industry. Simulation testing is a more effective means of evaluating an individual's ability to perform on the job, therefore enhancing the value of MCP credentials in the eyes of hiring and IT managers.

Key Advantages of Performance-Based Simulations

Require individuals to actually execute a task, rather than simply answering questions about it

Place a higher value on results—how closely a solution meets the requirements, not the path taken to achieve it

Provide a more accurate assessment of demonstrated skills

Simulate work environments to better reflect problem-solving in the real world

Mirror the actual job demands made in the workplace to build confidence

Transform preparation and practice for an exam into genuine experience

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which exams will include simulations?
A: In the future, most MCP exams will include simulations. In 2005, Microsoft introduced simulations with Exam 70-290: Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment and Exam 70-291: Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure (core MCSA and MCSE on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 exams). Some exceptions apply in selected regions. Please check with your local exam delivery provider for availability.

Q: Will exams be available in all current testing centers?
A: Exams are planned to be available in all testing centers. Please check with your local exam delivery provider for availability.

Q: What are the plans for releasing additional exams with simulations?
A: Microsoft released two simulation-based versions of Exam 70-293: Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure and Exam 70-294: Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure to complete the core Windows Server 2003 track in June 2005. We expect the exams to release worldwide at the same time in all testing centers. We are currently evaluating customer demand for Windows 2000 exams, and plan to include simulation-based items in at least one exam in the MCSE credential track.

Q: Is the entire exam going to be performed by interacting with simulations?
A: No. There are certain skills that are better tested through more traditional items. The number of simulations present in the exams will depend on the exam goals.

Q: Are the skills tested in each exam going to be redefined?
A: No. The exams will test for the same skills, but some questions will be replaced with simulation items.

Q: As the exams change, am I required to retake them?
A: No. Because the skills tested do not change, you are not required to retest.

Q: Will the exams take longer to complete?
A: No, exam times will not change significantly.
