Note: This is a companion lab for First Look Clinic 6408B – First Look: Getting Started with Server Management in Windows Server 2008.
This 90-minute lab provides hands-on experience with the following Windows Server 2008 Server Management functionality:
| • | Server Manager Overview |
| • | Server Core Installation |
| • | Windows PowerShell |
| • | Windows Remote Management |
IT Professionals currently experienced on the technologies included in Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and/or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, and who hold an MCSE or MCSA certification and/or equivalent knowledge.
| • | Experience with Windows Server 2000 and/or Windows Server 2003 |
| • | MCSA/MCSA Certification or equivalent knowledge. |
| • | High level of knowledge of Windows Server, Microsoft Active Directory Management and configuration. |
At Hands-On Lab Completion
After completing this lab, you will be able to:
| • | Use Server Manager to perform initial tasks necessary to complete installation of Windows Server 2008 |
| • | Use Server Manager to configure roles and features and monitor server status |
| • | Explore the Windows PowerShell environment |
| • | Use WinRM to perform computer management |
| • | Implement a Server Core scenario |

Exercise 1: Using Server Manager
After completing this exercise, students will be able to:
| • | Install and Configure Additional Roles |
| • | Install Additional Features |
| • | Remove Roles and Configure Additional Features |
| • | Troubleshoot and prepare for disaster recovery by using Server Manager |
Exercise 2: Using Windows PowerShell
After completing this exercise, students will be able to:
| • | Obtain Help in Windows PowerShell |
| • | Use Cmdlets for Windows PowerShell |
| • | Create Aliases for Windows PowerShell |
| • | Create Functions for Windows PowerShell |
| • | Navigate the Directory Structure using Windows PowerShell |
| • | Navigate the Registry using Windows PowerShell |
| • | Navigate the Certificate Store using Windows PowerShell |
| • | Create drive mapping using Windows PowerShell |
| • | Query WMI objects using Windows PowerShell |
Exercise 3: Implementing Windows Server 2008 Server Core
After completing this exercise, students will be able to:
| • | Set a password for the local Administrator account |
| • | Set Static IP Address |
| • | Join a Domain |
| • | Examine the Windows Firewall |
| • | Install DNS and DHCP Roles |
| • | Enable Terminal Server Administrator connections |
Exercise 4: Managing Computers Using Windows Remote Management (WinRM)
After completing this exercise, students will be able to:
