Recommended Licensing
There are several ways to license the products that support this scenario. See the following approach.
| Product | Recommendation |
|---|
| Windows 8 Enterprise | Option 1 | If Alice’s work desktop has a qualifying operating system (OS) and she is the primary user, license it with Software Assurance which allows her to access a corporate Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) on her personal laptop at home via Roaming Use Rights. |
| Option 2 | If Alice is not the Primary User of her desktop at work, license her home PC with VDA. This allows Alice access to a Windows 8 image via Windows To Go or VDI. |
| Office | License Alice for an Office 365 plan that includes Office Professional Plus. |
| CALs | Because Alice is already licensed for the Enterprise CAL Suite, no additional Client Access Licenses (CALs) are needed. |
Flexible and cost effective licensing through the Enterprise Agreement
For customers with more than 250 users or devices, the best way to take advantage of these trends and licensing choices is through the Enterprise Agreement which offers flexibility, manageability and the best value.

| Product | Recommendation |
|---|
| Client Access Licenses (CALs) for Exchange | Rolando is already licensed for the Enterprise CAL Suite on a per-user basis. |
| Windows 8 Enterprise | Option 1 | License Rolando’s non-Windows tablet with a Windows VDA subscription license. This allows him to access a Windows 8 image remotely on his tablet even though it doesn’t run the Windows operating system. |
| Option 2 | If Rolando is the primary user of another device licensed with Software Assurance or VDA, then that device can be licensed with the Windows Companion Subscription License. This allows Rolando to access VDI on his tablet (and up to 3 other additional devices). |
| Option 3 | If Rolando is the primary user of another device licensed with Software Assurance or VDA and he never brings his tablet on premises, he can access a corporate VDI via Roaming Use Rights since the tablet isn’t owned by the corporation. |
| Office | License Rolando for an Office 365 plan that includes Office Professional Plus. This will allow him to access any Office application via VDI. |

Recommended Licensing
There are several ways to license the products that support this scenario. See the following approach.
| Product | Recommendation |
|---|
| Windows | License Mae’s primary work device with Software Assurance for Windows if it has a qualifying OS or a Windows VDA subscription license – then pick the following Option 1 or Option2. |
| Option 1 | Since Mae is the primary user of the device licensed above with Software Assurance or VDA, a Windows CSL can be added to the device licensed above. This allows her to access a corporate Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) or use Windows To Go on any device that she personally owns or any corporate owned device that isn’t capable of running Windows 8 Pro. |
| Option 2 | Since Mae is the primary user of another device licensed with Software Assurance or VDA, when on the road, she can access a corporate VDI via Roaming Use Rights if the tablet isn’t owned by her company. |
| Office | License Mae for an Office 365 plan that includes Office Professional Plus. |
| CALs | Mae is licensed for the Enterprise CAL Suite so additional Client Access Licenses are not needed. |
