Step 1: Determine your organization type

To get started with Microsoft Volume Licensing for your health organization, you first need to determine your organization's business type. Microsoft offers the following types of Volume Licensing programs for health organizations:

Commercial licensing for privately run health organizations.

Government licensing for any government organization or institution that provides health services and coverage; sets or decides healthcare policy across a nation, state, or country; provides funding for health services and coverage; or has a regulatory role in health services and coverage.

Academic licensing for teaching hospitals, healthcare systems, and research laboratories that are wholly owned and operated by a Qualified Education User. Academic licensing options include the Campus Agreement, Open License for Academic, or Select License for Academic.

Step 2: Select the program that best fits your organization

Microsoft Volume Licensing offers a variety of programs that can be tailored to the size and purchasing preference of your organization.

Small to Midsize Commercial and Government Health Organizations

For small to midsize health organizations with 5 to 249 desktop PCs, there are two Microsoft Volume Licensing options that offer flexibility and are sized right for your organization's needs and procurement procedures.

Volume Licensing programDescription

Open License

The Open License agreement is ideal for organizations that need as few as five software licenses.
The program offers flexibility, low entry requirements, and the ability to pay as you go.

Open Value

Open Value makes it easier for you to track your organization's licenses because a single agreement
covers all the Microsoft software licenses within your organization, including affiliates. Payments
are spread out over the term of the agreement, so you can maximize your information technology (IT)
investments and plan ahead. Open Value includes Microsoft Software Assurance, an enhanced
maintenance program with benefits such as downloads of new products, Windows Vista Enterprise
operating system, software training, and e-learning.

Midsize to Large Commercial and Government Health Organizations

For midsize to large health organizations with 250 or more desktop PCs, Microsoft Volume Licensing offers programs that provide a cost-effective way to simplify license management and maintain a high standard of care, enable better communication with other health organizations, and increase employee productivity.

Select License

For health organizations that have mixed software product and purchasing requirements, the Select
License program features a pay-as-you-go licensing model that makes it easy to adapt to evolving
business needs. Your organization receives a volume price level for each pool of products selected
(in applications, systems, and servers), based on a three-year forecast.

Enterprise Agreement

The Enterprise Agreement program is a single agreement that helps you standardize technology across
your organization with the latest Microsoft software products, including Microsoft Office Enterprise
2007, Windows Vista Enterprise, and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. With a three-year engagement
term, you qualify for substantial discounts, as well as simplified license and budget tracking through a
single agreement. In addition, Enterprise Agreement includes Software Assurance, with additional
benefits such as software deployment planning and training.

Teaching Hospitals, Healthcare Systems, and Research Laboratories

Microsoft makes it easy for academic organizations to keep technology current and to see a positive return on IT investments—even on a limited budget—with a variety of academic agreements, including Open License for Academic, Select License for Academic, and Campus Agreement. If your organization qualifies, you can choose a one- or three-year subscription licensing term at a substantial discount.

Open License for Academic

This program offers an extensive product list and discounted pricing for schools of all sizes. By
placing an initial order for as few as five licenses, you can obtain the most current Microsoft
software products while managing overall costs and staying compliant.

Select License for Academic

For midsize to large educational organizations with 250 or more desktop PCs and the ability to
forecast software needs over time, Select License for Academic offers a wide range of Microsoft
products at volume discounts. With a three-year agreement, you can acquire discounted licenses on
an ongoing basis and reduce your total cost of software ownership.

Campus Agreement

For higher education organizations that want an affordable, subscription-based licensing program,
Campus Agreement makes it easy to license the entire organization or just a single department. Along
with the flexibility of a streamlined agreement and subscription process, you'll appreciate the
simplicity of counting people instead of computers. Campus Agreement is an annual program that lets
you keep your organization current on the latest Microsoft technology—even on a limited budget.
