The Microsoft Software Assurance "Cold" Backups for Disaster Recovery benefit helps your organization protect business information and preserve mission-critical IT solutions when disaster strikes.
For each license covered by Software Assurance, you are entitled to run one instance of the software on a "cold" server for disaster recovery purposes.
With this benefit, you have access to an online backup server (a "cold" server, or one that is turned off until an emergency situation) that can be moved into production so that users can continue to access critical data and applications. This enables you to respond quickly to a disaster, minimizing the overall impact to your systems and helping you protect business information.
If you acquire Software Assurance for qualifying server products and related Client Access Licenses (CALs), you are eligible for complimentary server licenses for those products for disaster recovery.
For each server license covered by Software Assurance, you are entitled to run one instance of the software on a "cold" server for disaster recovery purposes. The following Volume Licensing programs are eligible for this benefit:
Open License
Select License
Select Plus
Open Value
Open Value Company-Wide/Subscription
Select License with Software Assurance Membership
Select Plus with Software Assurance Membership
Enterprise Agreement/Subscription
Campus, School and Select Academic Agreement
Campus, School and Select Academic Agreement with Software Assurance Membership
No formal action is required for eligible customers to activate or use this benefit.
For each Server License with active Software Assurance, you have the right to install the same software on a cold backup server. Use of any server software under this Software Assurance disaster recovery benefit is subject to the use rights for that software (including, for example, any requirement to license each processor or copy separately) and to the terms and conditions associated with the disaster recovery benefit.
The number of disaster recovery licenses for which you qualify correlates directly to the number of licenses with active Software Assurance. You may use Volume Licensing media to install cold backups.
The product condition note regarding Cold Disaster Recovery Rights in the Microsoft Volume License Product List, together with the proof of license and Software Assurance coverage for the production server software (and required CALs), are evidence of the right to the cold disaster recovery server licenses.
