JB, in short, was established in 1855 by the late Sultan Abu Bakar (the Father of Modern Johor) and now serves as the administrative and commercial center of the state. While many of JB's attractions have links to the state's early history, Dataran Bandaraya (City Square) is a new attraction that was built to commemorate the proclamation of JB as a city on 1st January 1994. Langkawi Langkawi is actually made up of 99 islands. The largest of which is Pulau Langkawi, while some of the others appear to be mere dots in the emerald green ocean when viewed from the air. Langkawi offers natural attractions unsurpassed by any other in the region. Those who love a tropical island holiday and a place far from the maddening crowd will find their haven in Langkawi Island. Makam Mahsuri has a legend that the pure white sandy beaches were originated from the seepage of white blood that flowed from the body of a beautiful princess named Mahsuri. Mahsuri, who was wrongly accused of having an adulterous affair, was quickly judged, condemned, and sentenced to death. This has now become something like a shrine and is a "must-see" among tourists. The Makam Mahsuri is a fine white marble that is surrounded by white walls - a clear reminder of her innocence. Her tomb is about 12km away from the main town of Kuah.
