City of Miami
Miami, Florida provides a host of essential services for residents, visitors, and businesses, while trying to minimize costs. The city wanted to merge its GIS data with a consumer-oriented mapping application, so it chose Bing Maps to develop online applications that provide enhanced public safety response, urban planning, and tourism services.
Texas Natural Resources Information System
The Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) is a central repository for geographic information related to the state’s natural resource data. After Hurricane Rita in 2005, TNRIS needed quick, easy access of geospatial data to support emergency management. Using Bing Maps, TNRIS created a simple, yet innovative solution for analyzing and viewing geographic information.
U.S. DOT Maritime Administration
The Maritime Administration, a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, promotes and maintains waterborne transportation. To gather critical information and provide a single geographic view of data from many sources—especially during a crisis—the Maritime Administration created a data visualization system using Bing Maps.
Leicestershire Constabulary
The Leicestershire Constabulary, which provides police resources for Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland in the U.K., wanted a mapping solution to help its officers better respond to emergencies. Since deploying Bing Maps, the agency has seen a 286 percent increase in vehicle visits to crime hotspots, and reduced fuel consumption by 21 percent.
Strong Angel III
When a catastrophe wipes out communication lines, how will public agencies aid victims and speed the delivery of aid. Volunteers met at Strong Angel III to test technologies, including a Microsoft technology called FeedSync, which allowed participants to exchange data across a variety of platforms, including Bing Maps, to speed decision-making and response.
eCityGov Alliance
The eCityGov Alliance is a regional agency in Washington State that develops cross-boundary Web sites allowing users to find online access to services like permits, commercial information, recreation resources, and more. The agency used Bing Maps to build an application allowing users to search, locate, and learn about regional parks and recreational resources.
NYC MTA
The MTA of New York City recently released a new version of its Trip Planner online travel itinerary service. The service, which allows users to get walking, subway, and bus directions for their travel itinerary within the city, now features Bing maps, providing a richer visualization and interactive experience.
University of Cambridge
A research group at the University of Cambridge used Bing Maps to extract and make relevant information from data originally collected 150 years ago by Charles Darwin. The data will be presented throughout 2009, culminating in a seminar in July 2009 in Cambridge, to celebrate Darwin’s discoveries and scientific contributions.
U.S. EPA
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for ensuring public access to environmental information associated with sites across the country. The EPA recently launched an online resource using Bing Maps, which offers high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery, faster response times, and easy integration with environmental data sets.
