Urdu language Support
with Windows 2000

The information in this article applies to:

  • Windows 2000 Professional
  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Important:

This article contains information that modifies the registry. before modifying it, make sure that you back up it, and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry back if any problem occurs.

Symptoms:

By default Windows 2000 does not support Urdu Language.

Workaround:

To enable Urdu language support over Windows 2000, Follow this steps:

a) Install Urdu Language Support

  1. Download the following files to the following directory %Windir%\system32:
  2. Double click on urdu.reg it should add the entries to your registry files.
  3. For precautions restart the computer.
b) Add Arabic Language
  1. Open "Regional and Language Options" from Control Panel OR from Start Menu ->Run "intl.cpl".
  2. In the Language Settings for the System, select the Check box in front of Arabic Language.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. Restart the System.

c) Add Urdu Language
  1. Open "Regional and Language Options" from Control Panel OR from Start Menu -> Run "intl.cpl".
  2. Select Urdu from Your Locale (Location) Combo box.
  3. Select Urdu from the drop down menu in Select System Locale window from the Set default button

Now you can type Urdu text after selecting it from the taskbar.
Note: Urdu has 6 additional characters in its keyboard more than the Arabic keyboard.
