Cairo Microsoft Innovation Lab Director

Tarek Elabbady born and raised in Egypt. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Purdue University, 1994, where he studied modeling of electromagnetic fields and signal processing. He received the Geddes-Hauptman award for outstanding researcher 1993.

Elabbady joined Medtronic research team as a research scientist and contributed to new product designs of heart rhythm detection algorithms for implantable monitoring and therapeutic devices. He was the lead inventor of new waveform for defibrillation electric shocks that led to the introduction of ultra portable external cardiac defibrillators. He authored several publications and patents in the signal processing and design of medical applications.

After receiving his MBA from the University of Washington 1999, Tarek joined Microsoft's core Windows group where he led a variety of the Windows development initiatives. His contributions included Audio/Video home networking, Network platform components, and hardware innovation. His most notable contribution was being a member of the Windows Media Center Edition founding team.

Recently, Tarek led the proposal for Microsoft Innovation Lab in Cairo, and moved with his family back to his home town Cairo to establish and direct the new research Lab.
