As a little girl, I have always been fascinated by books and reading, knowledge
was something that I enjoyed acquiring, as my brother used to call me "a total geek
" . I joined Computer Science because I found in it a field where you get to learn
a lot about problem solving and analytical thinking. After graduation I worked as
a software engineer at first but I wasn't satisfied, I had a passion for research,
for trying new things, for innovation that I didn't find my job to satisfy, then
one of my friends told me about CMIC so I applied and after going through the interview
cycle I was accepted and starting the job that is constantly proving to be challenging
with a high demand for innovation and creativity.
After I joined CMIC I realized that this job is different from what I'm used to,
the degree of independence you have here is much higher and more important, you
get to figure out things on your own and handle all development tasks yourself from
designing to testing,. My days here at CMIC are really packed with problems to think
of and new concepts to learn, it's like a treasure hunt for the right innovation
and the next break through. In CMIC, I got to work amongst one of the most talented
and smart people I've met with everyone unique in their way. Each day in my life
here is rarely the same, applied research is proving to be an interesting adventure..
An RSDE is a doer, as Nayer, one of our researchers, calls us "a black box". We
work with the researcher to try to find the best innovative solution to problems
and implement this solution. We work on prototypes and proof of concept work. One
of the things that I found here to be of high importance unlike other places is
evaluating the results of your work and making sure that they are reliable and as
accurate as possible. This task really opened my eyes to ways of looking at my work
and the result I am producing in a way I wasn't used to. My work consists of two
parts, development and research with higher emphasis on development. I get to work
on a project that I own myself as my individual contribution to the center; this
allows me to really set all my innovation and creativity to work.
So, I start my day with the magic bliss of a coffee cup from our very much appreciated
coffee machine here at the center. Charged with caffeine, I dive into the world
of classification, social networks, user modeling ..etc..My tasks requires a high
demand of resourcefulness in figuring things out, you don't usually get the specific
requirements as it is accustomed in normal software development., I have to search
for possible solutions, try various venues of tackling the problem and doing all
development and testing task myself. I feel I have grown a lot in my work here at
CMIC, and constantly developing adaptability for the dynamic nature of the life
at an applied research center.
