Introduction
Tablet PC is a powerful PC running the Windows
XP Tablet PC Edition operating system, which is a superset of Windows
XP Professional. Tablet PC provides all the performance and
features of today's notebook PCs with added features to improve mobile
computing, including a natural interface for entering data using a tablet pen,
an ultra-light form factor, and advanced handwriting and speech recognition
capabilities. Windows XP Tablet PC Edition expands Windows XP
Professional capabilities giving you the features and
performance of the latest Microsoft operating system for PCs, and additional
capabilities for your Tablet PC.
Arabic Support
A. Summary
Since Windows XP Tablet PC Editionoperating
system is based on Windows XP Professional, It gives the same
Arabic support found on Windows XP Professional, which
includes:

Adding Arabic keyboard to the operating system (with all Arabic fonts used on Windows
XP Professional).

Users can set the date, time, currency and number format from regional options
which include Arabic region to display the information in Arabic language and
also Hijri date support which satisfies their need on their region.

Arabic support for Unicode and Non-Unicode applications.

How to add Arabic language support
To add the Arabic language support in
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, you need to install the complex script language
from the regional settings. To install complex script languages:

Click on Start, choose Control Panel.

Select Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options
category.

Choose Regional and Language options.
-
Click on Languages
tab.
-
Select the check box Install files for complex script and right-to-left
languages. Click OK to complete installation.
Customizing standards and formats for the user to specific Arab
country
You can customize the formats for numbers,
currencies, dates and time to the required format need on a specific Arab
country, this can be done through the following steps (complex script languages
must be installed first):

Click on Start, choose Control Panel.

Select Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options
category.

Choose Regional and Language options.
-
Click on Regional Options tab, and then choose the required Country to
apply the standards and formats for it. Click OK to complete
installation.
Note: from the customize button you can set numbers, currencies, dates
and time on your preferred format.
Changing system date to Hijri date
To use Hijri date you must first customize standards
and formats (Explained on the previous step) for an Arabic country then apply
the following steps:

Click on Start, choose Control Panel.

Select Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options category. Choose Regional
and Language options.

Click on Regional Options
tab, and then choose the required Country to apply the standards and formats
for it.

Click on Customize, and click on Date
tab.

From the Calendar type drop down menu, select Hijri date.
Finally, click OK
4. Arabic support for Arabic Unicode and Non-Unicode
applications
Windows XP supports 32 bit Arabic programs both Non-Unicode and Unicode
programs. However, to be able to run the non-Unicode Arabic programs you need
to set the system settings to be enabled for the Arabic language,
To select a language for Non-Unicode applications (complex script languages
must be installed first):

Click on Start, choose Control Panel.

Select Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options
category.

Choose Regional and Language options.
-
Click on Advanced tab.
-
Select from the list the required language and its country. Finally, click OK.
Note: This system setting enables non-Unicode programs to display menus
and dialogs in their native language. It does not affect Unicode programs, but
it does apply to all users of current computer.

Arabic support for applications
Because Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is built on top
of Windows XP Professional; you can run Windows XP–compatible applications like
Microsoft Office XP and enjoy new levels of productivity and freedom.
Typing Arabic using the On-Screen keyboard
Input Panel does not support Arabic keyboard, but it
will do support it in the next version. To avoid this limitation, you can use
On-Screen Keyboard.
To use On-Screen Keyboard, follow the following steps:

Click Start, choose Programs.
-
Then choose Accessories\Accessibility.
-
Then click on On-Screen Keyboard.
Tablet PC Platform SDK (Software Development Kit)
Using the Tablet PC Platform SDK you can build a
custom handwriting recognition component for Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC
Edition and then build applications that use your custom component. You may
download the Tablet PC Platform SDK from:

Note: The applications that are not designed to use your handwriting recognition
component will not benefit from it! Even this point, you may find a solution
for, by building an Arabic panel for your component.
