Microsoft Oman today announced that Oman Mobile is the first early adopter of Windows Server 2008 in the region. The major objective of the collaboration between Microsoft and Oman Mobile is around the evaluation of the new technology and its capabilities to support mission-critical roles such as enhancing network performance and providing increased security. With the deployment of Windows Server 2008, Oman Mobile is taking advantage of the rich features and powerful new functionality that the new system offers.
To access pre-release versions of Windows Server 2008, Oman Mobile became a first-time participant in the Microsoft Rapid Deployment Program. The company's IT staff evaluated Windows Server 2008 in a test lab before the main deployment to verify that it would work within its multi-vendor environment. The evaluation began in early November 2007 and took two weeks with the team deploying Windows Server 2008 on select servers. Following the evaluation, Oman Mobile has now deployed Windows Server 2008 on 10 of its 100 servers and plans to upgrade the rest over the course of the year.
"The market we operate in is growing exponentially and Oman Mobile needs to be in a position to adapt and deliver the best possible services to our customers," said Badar Al Marhoon, IT Manager, Oman Mobile. "One of our major priorities is that we needed to support a variety of technology platforms. From the outset Microsoft has understood our business and technology needs and the overall integration of the core infrastructure has improved productivity and reduced costs. Windows Server 2008 is not only part of the enterprise infrastructure but an essential component of overall business success. Oman Mobile is now better equipped to implement new services for customers and respond to changing market needs," he added.
Abdullah Lootah, Country Manager, Microsoft Oman said, "Oman Mobile is a strategic partner for Microsoft and we are working closely with the service provider on several critical areas for the development of new world telecom infrastructure. The new operating system has provided Oman Mobile with a roadmap to improve security, stabilize operating costs and make its business more agile. Oman Mobile's progressive view of technology has helped us demonstrate that Windows Server 2008 should be a key component in any enterprise wishing to optimize technology."
Three Windows Server 2008 improvements are particularly important in the Oman Mobile's new infrastructure. These include Network Access Protection technology, the Server Core installation option and the Read-Only Domain Controller feature.
Network Access Protection monitors all attempts to access the network and enforces security policies by denying or restricting access to users that do not conform to the company's security requirements. All domain controllers in Oman Mobile branch offices are configured as Read-Only Domain Controllers using the Server Core installation option, which is a minimal installation that runs only the files required for specific server roles. Read-Only Domain Controllers host read-only copies of the company's main Active Directory database. This configuration improves network security by helping prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to the domain controllers and changing the contents of the Active Directory database.
To further enhance network security, Internet Protocol security (IPsec) and the certificate-based public key infrastructure technology in Windows Server 2008 are integrated with the company's Active Directory to authenticate users throughout the network.
By deploying Windows Server 2008, Oman Mobile has improved the security and performance of its network. The new solution also eases administration, making it possible for IT staff to deploy servers more quickly and automate administration tasks.
"Thanks to Windows Server 2008, we now have the ability to do more with less. This new operating system has helped us to simplify deployment and management so we can reduce the costs of ongoing operations," added Al Marhoon.
Windows Server 2008 is the most advanced Windows Server operating system designed to power the next-generation of networks, applications, and Web services. With Windows Server 2008 Oman Mobile can now develop, deliver, and manage rich user experiences and applications, provide a highly secure network infrastructure and increase technological efficiency and value within the organization.
The new operating system (OS) builds on the success and strengths of its Windows Server predecessors while delivering new and powerful improvements to the base operating system.
