Now for the monthly Windows Server 2008 column, let's revert to Mohammed Baher Ibrahim from Microsoft Consulting Services…

Read-Only Domain Controllers

Large organizations with remote branch offices that are having the need for 24x7 authentication capabilities, little local IT knowledge or slow WAN links that can't accommodate the branch office users requests are always having the challenge of placing an additional domain controllers, this is because of the lack of physical security and the replication overhead. Windows server 2008 introduced a new feature to tackle hese challenges; a read-only domain controller (RODC) is a new type of domain controller in the Windows Server® 2008 operating system. With an RODC, organizations can easily deploy a domain controller in locations where physical security cannot be guaranteed. An RODC hosts read-only partitions of the Active Directory® Domain Services (AD DS) database except of the accounts passwords thus reducing the risk to the organization directory services. RODC is having the following features:
  1. Read-only Active Directory database

  2. Unidirectional replication

  3. Credential caching

  4. Administrator role separation

  5. Read-only Domain Name System

RODC is designed primarily to be deployed in remote or branch office environments. Branch of¬fices typically have:

  1. Relatively few users

  2. Poor physical security

  3. Relatively poor network bandwidth to a hub site

  4. Little knowledge of information technology (IT)

Note that some applications such as Exchange 2007 do not support using read-only domain controllers.
