You’re shooting digital photos everywhere and anywhere that you can. You’ve mastered transferring images to the computer using Windows XP. And the more you use your digital camera, the more images you’ll want—and need—to find.

The My Pictures folder in Windows XP makes image organization a breeze. By creating additional subfolders within My Pictures, you can set up a smart and simple system for sorting and accessing your photos.

There are different ways to create and organize folders. One of the more popular—because it makes retrieval a snap—is to organize by category. Categories can be anything you want them to be. Here are some examples:

  • Family
  • Friends
  • Vacation
  • Pets
  • Work
  • Holidays
  • Miscellaneous

Creating Folders

Create folders for each of these categories, or any other that works best for you.

To create a folder:

  1. Click the Start button, and then click My Pictures.
  2. On the left side of the My Pictures window, under File and Folder Tasks, click Make a new folder.
  3. Type a name for the new folder over the higlighted name ("New Folder") and press ENTER.

You can also direct photos to the appropriate folder when transferring them to your computer from your camera, memory card, a CD, or elsewhere. Using the Windows XP Scanner and Camera Wizard helps. When you get to the Picture Name and Destination dialog box in the wizard, you can create a destination folder with a name of your choosing.
