Malibu Boats puts Corvette on the waterMalibu Boats puts Corvette on the water

By Alan R. Earls

Ever see a sports car zoom across a lake? Malibu Boats has succeeded in putting the essence of the famous Chevrolet Corvette into a boat. Like its automotive inspiration, this "ultimate" sport boat—reputed to be the fastest production towboat ever created, with a top speed of 63 miles per hour—boasts unprecedented performance and head-turning style. The boat includes authentic Corvette high-back seats, an eight-speaker stereo system, rear vents styled after the Corvette taillights and designed for through-hull ventilation, the signature Corvette "cove" (a stylistic indentation in the side of the vehicle), and a hood modeled after the car's that opens to reveal a storage area.

Thanks to such innovations and its unique company culture, Malibu—which uses Business Portal for Microsoft Dynamics GP to give employees and dealers a single point of entry for self-serve access to various data—has won more Product Excellence Awards from Powerboat Magazine than all its competitors combined. According to Paul Singer, vice president of sales and marketing, Malibu founder Robert Alkema built his first boat at the age of 12 and launched his own company in 1982. Since then, the company has experienced meteoric growth in North America as well as in Australia.

However, the secret to success, according to Singer, is still the same. He says the management mantra is to "build the best boat possible, enjoy work, and provide boat owners the best possible value."

"Bob Alkema has established an environment here that allows each of us autonomy and creativity, but we are also members of a team," explains Singer. "We say it's like a family here, and the difference about Malibu is that we mean it. We encourage a leadership style that rewards creativity and teamwork, because that's what it takes to build cutting-edge ski boats."
