If you'd like to keep up to date on what's happening with HTML Help, here are some Web sites that have been commenting on HTML Help and HTML-based user assistance in general.
Just before Thanksgiving, Microsoft began a public beta of HTML Help at http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/author/htmlhelp/. Although this beta doesn't include all of the features discussed in this article, it will give you a good first look at the product.
The KNOWware site (http://www.kware.com) includes an extensive resource list of tools, Web sites, and white papers on WinHelp and HTML-based help .
WinWriters publishes The WinHelp Journal, a quarterly newsletter that focuses on WinHelp design and development. The journal has recently begun to shift its focus to HTML-based help systems. You'll find an extensive resource list (see http://www.winwriters.com).
The Work Write web site (http://www.workwrite.com) covers tools and technologies that support WinHelp and HTML-based user assistance. A highlight of the site is a detailed interview with Microsoft's Ralph Walden, the development lead for WinHelp and HTML Help. You'll also find an updated list of authoring tools that support HTML Help at http://www.workwrite.com/reswh2wb.htm.
The WinHlp-l listserv has recently begun to cover HTML Help topics. This coverage has increased with Microsoft's release of a public beta. For information on joining the list, visit http://www.humberc.on.ca. A less active Usenet newsgroup (comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.winhelp) now focuses on Windows help and is likely to cover HTML Help as more authors begin using it.
If you're a CompuServe user, you should also visit the Hypertext Tech forum (GO HYPERTEXT), sponsored by the Windows Users Group (WUGNET). Microsoft's Ralph Walden is a frequent visitor. In addition, the forum includes a library devoted to HTML Help.
