Chapter 12: Managing and Tracking Your Investments

401(k) and 403(b) accounts

One of the easiest financial management activities you can do with Money is track your retirement account by using the 401(k) Manager. Because of the special tax protection of a 401(k) account, you do not have to enter or track detailed transaction information; you only enter the quantity and the current price. And Money can automatically calculate the quantity for you by comparing it to your quarterly statements. Plus, within the 401(k) Manager there are links to 401(k) tips, comparing mutual funds, step-by step guides, and retirement planning research.

To create a 401(k) or 403(b) account:

  1. Click Investing.
  2. Click Investing Tools, and click 401(k) Manager.
  3. If this is your first time using the 401(k) Manager, click Create a new account. If you have previously run the 401(k) Manager, click Create a new 401(k) or 403(b) account in the left pane.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to enter your retirement account information.

When you receive statements from your retirement account:

  1. Click Investing.
  2. Click Investing Tools, and click 401(k) Manager.
  3. In the Choose account box, select the account you want to update.
  4. Click Update this account in the left pane.
  5. In the Update your 401(k) or 403(b) account page, enter the date from the paper statement and the total ending balance for the account. On the bottom half of the screen, update each investment's quantity, price and market value.
  6. Click Next.

Money automatically enters the appropriate purchase and sale transactions to your retirement account based on the information from your statement. Follow this simple procedure each time you receive a statement in the mail so that Money always has your up-to-date retirement account information.
