Chapter 12: Managing and Tracking Your Investments

Work with an individual investment

With your investment accounts now in place, you are ready to add individual investments. Transactions such as buys, sells, splits, and options can be manually entered for an investment or, if your brokerage firm supports online banking, you can download this information directly into Money.

To set up an investment:

  1. Click Investing.
  2. Click Investing Tools, and then click Portfolio Manager.
  3. In the left pane, point to Work with investments, and then click Set up a new investment.
  4. In the New Investment Wizard, select the account where the investment will be held or enter a new name, and then click Next.
  5. Type the name of the investment, and then click Next.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen until you finish setting up the new investment.

Tip
When you set up each investment, enter the stock price, quantity, and date. Although they are not required fields, providing this information helps Money estimate your actual gains or losses for each investment.

The investment appears under the account in which it is held. You can add transactions to the investment to keep the investment holdings current and record special activities like a transfer, stock split, spin-off, or company merger.

To enter a purchase, sale, or transfer of an investment or stock option:

  1. Click Investing.
  2. Click Investing Tools, and then click Portfolio Manager.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) next to an investment to open it.
  4. Click New.
  5. In the transaction window, click the Activity box, and then select the type of transaction you are recording. Fill in all of the other fields in the window by entering the complete details of the transaction.
  6. To save your changes, click OK.

Tip
When you enter the quantity, price, commission, and total of a transaction, Money can help you check the calculations to check for errors. Fill in three of the fields, and then press the TAB key while in the third field to calculate the figure for the fourth field. Once calculated, the fourth field should match your investment's paper statement.

To enter a transfer, stock split, spin-off, or company merger:

  1. Click Investing.
  2. Click Investing Tools, and then click Portfolio Manager.
  3. In the left pane, point to Record a special activity, and then click the item you want to enter.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
