Susan A. Point is a Coast Salish artist from the Musqueam Fist Nation. She was born in 1952 and lives on the Musqueam Reserve near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. As well as practicing traditional Coast Salish motifs, Susan also expresses her own personal style. Like many native artists, she uses the form and meaning found in traditional art to create innovative work in a wide range of mediums. Susan initially began producing fine art in precious metals, serigraphs and acrylic paintings, however, she is now producing large scale public art in mediums which include glass, wood, stainless steel, and concrete.
About Land, Sea and Sky
By Susan Point
In 1993 the Vancouver International Airport Authority commissioned me to create several pieces of public art for Gates 9 and 10. They requested that I address the theme to relating to land, sea and sky. As well as producing carved cedar panels, glass architectural panels and copper etchings, I created this series of limited edition intaglio aquatints entitles "Land", "Sea" and "Sky". The imagery within "Land" is that of two wolves with a sun in the center flanked by mountains and stylistic trees. The imagery within the "Sea" is that of two salmon heads and two salmon eggs with a moon in the center and, once again, flanked by stylized imagery of kelp. The image within sky is that of two eagles with the sun in the center and, once again, flanked by mountains and trees. Although these images are very contemporary in their appearance they are entirely created with traditional Coast Salish elements (i.e. crescent and wedge shapes).
