Microsoft North American Retail Software Warranty Procedures

I. Microsoft Software Warranty Procedures.

All Microsoft software obtained in the United States and Canada (North America) at a retailer comes with a warranty as described in the license terms accompanying the software. To make a warranty claim, you must comply with the warranty procedures below.

  • [Contact Microsoft at 800 Microsoft for a warranty return authorization code]
  • Uninstall the software from all devices and delete any backup copies.
  • Return the software, media, original packaging, manuals and related materials to Microsoft at the appropriate address below within 30 days of acquiring it. You should mail it to Microsoft via traceable means, such as FedEx, UPS, Airborne, or certified and insured United States mail.
  • Provide a copy of proof of purchase, such as a copy of the sales receipt, credit card statement or cancelled check.
  • Provide complete contact information: address (no PO Boxes), telephone number and e-mail address, if applicable.
  • Include a brief statement about the reasons for making a warranty claim.

If your warranty for the software has expired, you are not eligible for a refund or replacement for the software under the terms of the warranty. In addition, these warranty procedures do not apply to:

  • Software obtained from Microsoft without a warranty, such as software provided “as is” or for free.
  • OEM Software preloaded on a device.
    Contact the manufacturer.
  • Software obtained through volume licensing or subscription.
    Consult your program agreements.
  • Software obtained through a reseller or contractor.
    Contact your Authorized Microsoft Distributor.
  • XBOX console or any other Microsoft hardware products unit.

We will respond to your request for warranty service within 2-4 weeks after we receive your claim or you first contact us regarding warranty service. It may take longer to process your claim. Failure to comply with these procedures could result in denial or delay in processing your claim for warranty service. We will reimburse you up to $7 U.S. for the costs of mailing the software to Microsoft.
