Sender ID Framework SPF Record Wizard

Sender ID Framework (SIDF) is critically important to the detection of spam and phishing, exploits, and protecting domains and brands from spoofing while increasing the deliverability of legitimate e-mail.

To assist you in your implementation of SIDF, we have created a multi-step wizard to guide you through the process of creating a Sender Policy Framework (SPF) text record for publishing in your Domain Name System (DNS) zone file. This tool has been optimized to provide you the highest level of protection from spoofing while enhancing the deliverability of legitimate email used by leading ISP and email providers. Records created are compatible with both the MAIL FROM or reverse path (RFC 2821 protocol's MAIL command ) and the Purported Responsible Address (PRA), (RFC 2822 message headers).

Note for some complex e-mail environments, you may wish to manually edit the SPF record created to utilize advanced SPF features. Prior to creating your record, we recommend you review our Implementation Tips for the Sender ID Framework document. Technical details and the SPF record specifications can be reviewed at http://www.microsoft.com/senderid/resources.

How does Sender ID Framework work?

  1. Sender sends an e-mail to recipient. No user interaction or updated client or server changes are required.
  2. Recipient’s inbound e-mail server receives the e-mail and using SIDF, calls the Purported Responsible Domain’s (PRA) DNS for the SPF record.
  3. The Receiving Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) determines if the outbound e-mail server’s IP address matches the IP addresses that are authorized to send e-mail for the domain.
  4. Domain and / or IP sender reputation data is applied to the SIDF verdict check.
  5. Based on the SPF record syntax, pass or fail verdict and content filtering score, the receiving MTA delivers the email to either the inbox, junk/bulk or quarantine folder. For e-mail which fails, receiving networks may block, delete or junk the e-mail.

Step 1 of 4: Identify Your Domain
