How Microsoft Office 2010 contributes to a safer, more trusted Internet

As the security landscape changes, Microsoft Office has changed with it. Microsoft Office 2010 introduces new features that help you open files and view them more securely.
The following Microsoft Office security improvements allow you to:
- Open files more securely. Our developers have created a layered defense that Microsoft Office documents go through to determine document safety before you open them. Office File Validation pays special attention to older file formats since many exploits target them.
- Block file types based on Office application. You can now configure Microsoft Office security features to block files for each application to manage security differently for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint file types.
- View blocked files. Now you can see the content in blocked Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without risking computer infection. Protected View gives you a read-only view of the document in an isolated environment which has minimal access to your computer system and will not change your other files and information.
All of these features are tied together into a layered defense so that you can configure Microsoft Office 2010 to inspect all files, test them for validity, and when appropriate, show them in a read-only protected state. All this happens in real time, with an indistinguishable performance impact on your computer’s operation.
