More Information and System Requirements

How to Use the Source Code
To run the demo files, install the source code to your hard disk and build the projects using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET.

System Requirements

You'll need the following hardware and software to use the source code:
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET

  • A computer capable of running Microsoft Visual Studio .NET. The following hardware is recommended by the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Web site:

    • PC with a Pentium-II class processor, 450 MHz

    • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or later operating system

    • Minimum RAM requirements:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional: 160 MB
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional: 96 MB
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server: 192 MB
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation: 64 MB
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server: 160 MB

Installing the Files
The download link opens a self-extracting executable file. To copy all of the source code onto your hard disk, click the link to run the executable. By default, the code will self-extract to a temporary folder, C:\VBNET.

ADO.NET Demos
Several of the demo projects use ADO.NET. To operate correctly, it might be necessary to configure the demo application to connect to your database. Please see the ConnStrings.vb file in the project for additional database connection information.

ASP.NET Demos
Please follow these steps to run an ASP.NET demo project for Chapters 23 through 26:

  1. Copy the demo folder to your Web server. For example, copy the DataBinding folder to InetPub\wwwroot.

  2. Open the Internet Information Services administrative tool.

  3. Right-click your new folder, DataBinding in our example, and click Properties on the shortcut menu. This opens the Properties dialog box.

  4. On the Directory tab, click Create and then click OK to close the dialog box.

  5. Use your Web browser to view the appropriate ASP.NET file or open the project file on your Web server with Visual Studio .NET.
Uninstalling the Source Code
To remove the source code, use Windows Explorer to delete the folder \VBNET and all of its contents.
