More Information and System Requirements

System Requirements (excerpted from the book's Introduction)

To use the sample code files, you'll need the following:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 (SP3 or later recommended), Microsoft Windows XP Professional, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web edition.
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (Personal, Standard, or Enterprise Edition -- SP3 recommended) or the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), which is included with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later
  • Internet Information Services (IIS). To access the ASP.NET features, IIS must be installed prior to installing the .NET Framework.
  • The Microsoft .NET Framework Software Development Kit, which you can download from the .NET Framework Download page. (Because Microsoft Visual Studio .NET includes the SDK, you don't need to install the .NET Framework SDK separately if you install Visual Studio .NET.) Note that Windows Server 2003 comes with the .NET Framework version 1.1 preinstalled, so you do not need to install this separately.
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 or Visual Basic .NET 2003, Professional Edition or higher. You can use the Standard Edition, but some chapters (including Chapter 10) use project types only available in the Professional or higher editions.
Installing the Sample Files
The download link opens an InstallShield executable file containing a license agreement. To copy the sample files onto your hard disk, click the link to run the executable and then accept the license agreement that is presented. By default, the sample files will be copied to the folder C:\Microsoft Press\ASPNETSBS, and a virtual folder ASPNETSBS will be created. The destination folder will also contain a Readme.htm file that you'll need to refer to for instructions in setting up and using the sample files. Note: you will need Administrative privileges to install the sample files.

The sample files are organized by chapter, with each chapter having a corresponding project (with the exception of chapters 8 and 10, which have two projects). All of the projects are contained within a single Visual Studio Solution, so you can open them all at once if you wish.

Uninstalling the Sample Files
To remove the sample files, make the appropriate selection from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
