Chapter 3: A New Breed of Threats
Chapter 3 A New Breed of Threats
The Internet is changing society. Among the changes are a new set of concerns, vulnerabilities, and threats. Now that you’ve been introduced to the basic privacy and security issues as well as the rudimentary technical design of the Internet, let’s begin exploring some of the threats you face on the Internet.
Specifically, in this chapter, you’ll learn how the Internet is reducing the privacy of ordinary people. You’ll also find out how con artists and stalkers are plying their old tricks on this new medium. In addition, you’ll discover some of the types of threats the Internet has enabled, including Denial of Service attacks and new strains of computer viruses. I’ll warn you before we begin that you might get progressively more worried as you read through the chapter. Keep in mind that the focus in this chapter is on the range of threats you face online, from the general loss of privacy inherent in Internet use to the various kinds of electronic surveillance, attacks, and viruses currently making the rounds on the Web. That’s the bad news. The good news is that in subsequent chapters of this book, we’ll examine the steps you can take to protect yourselfincluding your computer, your children, and your business dealingsagainst these insidious threats or to deal with breaches in your online security should they occur.
