      This support tool is intended for customers whose OneCare firewall reports that it cannot install a required upgrade or cannot turn on the firewall. This tool is NOT intended to diagnose or treat more specific functionality issues such as opening or closing ports, allowing applications, or otherwise.

      When do you need to use this tool?

      This tool should be used in the following two cases
      • Case 1:
        • You see red action items An error has prevented Windows Live OneCare from installing a required upgrade
        • AND Firewall is turned Off
        • AND upon clicking the “Turn on Firewall” button the following error dialogue appears: Windows Live OneCare cannot change your Firewall settings at this time. Please try again later.
      • Case 2:
        • You see the red action item: Firewall is turned Off
        • AND upon clicking the “Turn on Firewall” button the following error dialogue appears: Windows Live OneCare cannot change your Firewall settings at this time. Please try again later.

      • Windows Live OneCare 2.0

    • Step 1: Confirm your version of OneCare is 2.0 or greater
      1. Open OneCare.
      2. Click Help, then About Windows Live OneCare.
      3. Confirm that OneCare version starts with the number 2, e.g., 2.0.2500.10

      Step 2: Write down any custom settings for firewall

      This tool will reset all firewall settings (the program list and port list will be cleared). Please write down any custom settings for the firewall. You can note settings by following these instructions:
      1. Open OneCare.
      2. Under Quick links, click Change Settings.
      3. On the Firewall tab, note which check boxes are checked.
      4. Click Advanced Settings.
      5. On the Ports and Protocols tab, note which check boxes are checked.


      6. Optionally, do the following steps

      7. On the Programs tab, note the programs that you have allowed and blocked. (Note: this is optional, as you would be prompted for each program after repair and you can answer the question.)
      8. On the Network connections tab, note the Zone for each network. (Note: this is optional as you will be prompted to classify networks post repair and you can answer the questions then.)


      Step 3: Run the OneCare Firewall Repair Tool

      Windows XP
      1. Download and save the OneCareFirewallRepair tool to a location on your machine (such as on your desktop).
      2. From an administrator account, double click the file to launch the program.
      3. Click Continue.
      4. Read the End-User Licensing Agreement (EULA). If you agree to and accept the terms, select the “I accept the terms of the End-User Licensing Agreement” radio button, then click Continue button.
      5. Click Repair to begin the repair process.
      6. Wait for the repair tool to run to completion (the progress bar should be completely filled and the tool should report that it has completed).
      7. Be sure to save and close any open applications, then click Restart Now to restart your computer.
      8. NOTE: On most XP machines, the tool must be run again after the reboot to ensure successful repair. Please repeat steps 2 through 7.
      9. The repair is now complete.

      Windows Vista
      1. Download and save the OneCareFirewallRepair tool to a location on your machine (such as on your desktop).
      2. Right-click the file, then click Run as administrator.
      3. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide permission to continue.
      4. Click Continue to continue within the tool.
      5. Read the End-User Licensing Agreement (EULA). If you agree to and accept the terms, select the “I accept the terms of the End-User Licensing Agreement” radio button, then click Continue.
      6. Click Repair to begin the repair process.
      7. Wait for the repair tool to run to completion (the progress bar should be completely filled and the tool should report that it has completed).
      8. Be sure to save and close any open applications, then click Restart Now to restart your computer.
      9. The repair is now complete.
