Optic 2000, a network of 1,200 opticians in France, was looking for a centralized, easy-to-use retail management solution that could be adapted to the needs of the individual stores in the network. Because each optician operates as an independent business, the solution needed to be both easy to use and cost-effective.

“Our objective is to streamline our resource management with this solution, to deliver a real value proposition to our customers—through the advice and support we offer during the sales process and beyond, as well as by ensuring we are offering real value for the money,” says Didier Papaz, CEO, Optic 2000.

With its constituent businesses hampered by tools that were no longer simple and effective to use, and which were not able to respond to industry developments, Optic 2000 sought to adopt a unified solution that could be adapted to the individual needs of more than 1,850 cooperatives, franchises, and outlets. “We wanted a single solution that was easier to manage and that allowed us to optimize the quality of services provided by our IT department to our users,” explains Patrick Seux, director of organization and IT of Optic 2000.

Choosing an Agile and Flexible Retail Management Solution

After extensive research, the team abandoned the idea of an eyewear-specific retail solution in order to benefit from the power and flexibility of Microsoft Dynamics for Retail. In addition to the stability, performance, ease of maintenance, and rich functionality native to Microsoft Dynamics for Retail, the solution proved an ideal platform for developing new tools specific to the eyewear industry.

“By using Microsoft Dynamics for Retail, we can regularly update the entire system: all the applications on all the workstations,” says Seux. “We also wanted to manage, archive, and share our data from each point of sale.”

With Microsoft Dynamics for Retail, the data can remain specific to each outlet, while security features can be centralized. Seux says. ”The Microsoft Dynamics solution will allow us to confidently access data on-the-go from mobile devices and heterogeneous point-of-sale terminals—for a price lower than that of the software currently in use.”
 
Beyond the standard ERP and retail functions of purchasing, inventory, pricing, store management, and POS, Optic 2000 also manages requirements that are specific to the optical sector. Glasses and lenses sold by prescription are constrained by prescription management, reimbursement, health insurance and third-party payer regulations. To manage the complex supply chain for technical products, such as custom-made lenses, Optic 2000 has engaged a partner to develop industry-specific functionality that integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Dynamics for Retail.
