Several advantages when upgrading to the newest version of Internet Explorer

(OSLO, 19th February). Microsoft Norway would like to emphasize the fact that a lot of new developments have been made on the web since IE6 was launched. The better support for international webstandards and greatly improved functionality means that those who can should upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or the release candidate of Internet Explorer 8. We would still like to stress the fact that it’s still safe to use Internet Explorer 6.
- Microsoft is continuously working to make all our products and services more secure and more user friendly. The newer versions of Internet Explorer have support for international webstandards and significant improvements have been made to both security and functionality. Based on this we support the initiative that has been made to upgrade from Internet Explorer to newer versions.
At the same time it is also important to not forget that a lot of companies have internal systems that rely on Internet Explorer 6 to work. To avoid problems with transition we recommend the IT-departments at the companies to refer to our published guidelines for upgrading to newer version
of Internet Explorer, says Isabella Alveberg, Director at Microsoft Norway.
As a rule of thumb, Microsoft recommends both private persons and companies to use the latest versions of the company’s products and services. Internet Explorer 7 is the latest web browser from Microsoft, and can be downloaded from the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
- We have an understanding for the initiative by several webmasters to upgrade to versions that have better support for international web standards. This makes it easier to create web pages and makes up the foundation for a more seamless internet experience. At the same time it’s important
to remember that a lot of web pages are optimized for Internet Explorer 6. Upgrading to a version that doesn’t take this into account can make it difficult for users to use these web pages. IE7 and
IE8 even more so take this into consideration. If done right, this new initiative might lead to an improved internet user experience for everyone. Internet Explorer users can upgrade to newer versions at any time, without any costs, says Alveberg.
For many businesses, having a standardized and predictable IT-environment means significant business gains. Internet Explorer makes this possible by offering updates via Windows Update and Windows Update Services. IT managers who would like to update can find information about this at the following URL: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/default.aspx
Those who would like to check the new features in Internet Explorer 8 can download the latest release candidate version from the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/default.aspx
Users should be aware that not all web pages fully support IE8 yet. Here are some of the new features in IE8:

  • The new accelerator feature in Internet Explorer 9 lets you manage your daily browser tasks in a faster, more effective and simpler way.
  • InPrivate-browsing lets you surf web pages without leaving traces on your computer. This is handy when you are using the internet on a net café, or if you are looking for a gift using the family PC.
  • Following stock figures, weather reports, sports results and the status on your net auctions can be a time consuming task. Web Slices is a new function that helps you save time. It gives you the relevant information without you having to visit the same webpage over and over again.
  • Better searches – The improved search function gives you searching suggestions when you type in words in the search bar. If you’re using Live Search, the browser will display visual search results in the browser’s search bar.
  • The SmartScreen-filter helps in protecting yourself against phishing web sites, and web sites that try to install malware on to your computer.
  • Internet Explorer also gives you a more stabile web surfing experience. If a web page crashes, only the affected browser tab will crash. The main browser will stay stabile
