How to Buy for Education
Microsoft has a range of flexible licensing options designed to suit the diverse needs of educational institutions, education staff and faculty, as well as students. For education customers who purchase software in quantity and manage software across multiple computers, purchasing through volume licensing programs is an effective way to reduce the total cost of software ownership. Please see below for licensing overview and options.
Academic licensing is only available to Qualified Educational Users - please click this link to see if you qualify.
STUDENTS
New Zealand students may be eligible to buy retail version Microsoft software at special educational prices for their own use at home. It gives students an affordable and legitimate way to have the latest versions of Microsoft software and benefit from advanced features when completing homework or assignments at school, tertiary institutions or polytechnics. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS OR ESTABLISHMENTS
Educational institutions or establishments may be eligible to purchase Microsoft software through Microsoft Academic Volume Licensing programs which are designed to reduce the costs associated with acquiring, upgrading, maintaining and managing software. Microsoft Academic Volume Licensing programs provide simple and flexible, volume-based pricing for education customers. If your institution purchases software in quantity and manages software across multiple computers, education volume licensing provides an effective way of reducing your total cost of software ownership.
Which Licensing option? (Select option below for more information)
Subscription licensing (One or three year contract)
Gives you the right to run a selection of products and any upgrades, for a year-long term. Even if the number of computers or users increases during the annual agreement period, you remain fully licensed throughout the subscription term. If you choose the three-year agreement option, annual pricing is fixed for the three-year term. Microsoft has two subscription licensing programs for academic customers:
Microsoft Campus Agreement

Microsoft’s Campus Agreement is an annual, comprehensive licensing program specifically created for higher education institutions and offers the simplicity of counting people instead of computers
Microsoft School Agreement

This agreement makes it easy for preschool, primary and secondary schools to license all of a school’s computers by counting them just once per year.
Transactional Volume Licensing
Enables you to acquire perpetual software licences (meaning you own the licences) while eliminating the costs and packaging of retail software. Microsoft offers two transactional volume licensing programs for education:
Microsoft Academic Select Agreement

This program provides volume licensing for medium-to-large institutions with the ability to forecast their licensing needs over a three-year period.
Microsoft Academic Open License

This program is a cost-effective way for institutions to license Microsoft software, starting with as few as five licences.
EDUCATION FACULTY AND STAFF
Education institutions that have acquired licenses through Microsoft Academic Volume Licensing programs may grant their faculty and staff the right to use a second copy of a limited selection of products on either a home or portable computer for work related purposes.
