Delivering a better computing experience for Māori Language SpeakersNew Zealanders are now able to use Office 2003 and Windows XP in Māori. Microsoft New Zealand in partnership with the Māori Language Commission (Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori) and Waikato University's School of Māori and Pacific Development have developed Māori Language Interface Packs for Windows XP and Office 2003. The Language Interface Packs enable your organisation to install a reo Māori layer on top of an existing installation of Microsoft Windows XP and standard Microsoft Office applications - including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. They are free to download and they enable Māori language speakers to work more easily in their preferred language whether at home, in business or education. You can request a CD copy of the Language Interface Pack by calling 0800 800 004. There is a postage and packaging cost of $15.

Other Info:The Language Interface Pack (LIP) will enable customers to install a local language version as a "skin" on top of an existing installation of Microsoft Office 2003. The LIP provides users with the opportunity to work with a product in the language of their choice and they localise approximately eighty five per cent of the user experience. In some cases, due to the fact that they are built on core products of a different language, not all user elements can be localised. In other cases due to the different grammatical structures of both languages, there may be an occasional phrase which appears incorrectly or which doesn’t reflect an actual meaning in Maori; this is something we hope to address in future versions of our products. We would welcome your feedback and any good news stories on the LIP via email to Anne Taylor Full install/uninstall instructions can be found on the download pages for each LIP and in the readme files that accompany the install, please take the time to understand these before installation. Some high level guidance is also provided below.
