Windows XP Mode OPK | Windows Virtual PC Software | Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC Software Update | Terms of Agreement

The OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) for Windows XP Mode is designed to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system builders install Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC on the Windows 7 operating system.

Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC Features

Windows XP Mode Windows Virtual PC
  • Allows end users to run older Windows XP applications on Windows 7 Ultimate and Professional versions.
  • Installs a virtual hard disk file that contains Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3.
  • Requires client virtualisation software like Windows Virtual PC.
  • Creates separate virtual machines (VMs) on the Windows desktop. Each VM functions as the hardware of a complete physical computer.
  • Uses VMs to run different versions of Windows operating systems.* You may do this only as permitted within the Microsoft Software Licence Terms (formerly "EULA").

* In addition to Windows Vista, you can deploy many versions of Windows 7 inside a VM on a computer running an edition of Windows 7 that supports Virtual PC or third-party virtualisation software, provided that both the virtual and the physical software are properly licensed.

How Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode Work Together

Virtualisation, together with Windows XP Mode, allows customers to run legacy applications in a tested software environment, instead of delaying the deployment of a new operating system because of application-compatibility concerns.

Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC Software Update - NEW

Microsoft has removed the virtualisation-enabled processor requirement for Windows XP Mode on Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate. Windows XP Mode continues to use hardware virtualisation such as Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) or the AMD-V™ chipset when available but it no longer requires them.

Microsoft has released an update that enables PCs without hardware virtualisation to also take advantage of Windows XP Mode. The software update provides support for Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode on machines with non-Hardware-Assisted Virtualization (HAV) processors. This software will:

  • Update Windows Virtual PC to run on non-HAV CPUs.
  • Install integration components into the Windows XP Mode VM to run on non-HAV platforms.

The update should be installed in addition to the Windows XP Mode OPK and Windows Virtual PC software.

Terms of Agreement

Once terms are accepted, system builders can preinstall and distribute the Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC software bits on Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate systems when these products are available through Authorised Microsoft OEM Distributors shortly before General Availability on October 22.
