If it is not connected to Outlook already you can open that file by File->
Open-> Outlook Data File...

I have access to the main archived files but then there are some other
archived files that i can't find. I have tried opening these files through
file-data file management. then i clicked on open folder. when i do this
another box comes up saying you ar attempting to open a file type "office
data file (.pst) but thats as far as i get. The emails i'm trying to retreive
are as far back as 2005.

You are trying to open them by double cklicking the pst-files from within an
Explorer window? That doesn't work. You can only open them by File-> Open
Outlook Data File...

When did you archive the 2005 items? Have you checked your backups already?

  Answer
"I have tried to open then through the data file but it says i don't have
the program to open it???"
You must do this in Outlook.

"what do you mean by have you checked your back ups yet????"
To see if you can find your items there.

  Jodie,
Any luck yet?

I take it that the file you are trying to view has an extension of .pst. As
Roady was mentioning, you will need to open this type of file in Outlook.
Depending on what version of Outlook you are in there are differernt ways to
open/ mount this pst file. In 03 and 07 (and I believe it is the same in
xp/02) you will need to go to:

File, then select Data File Management. On this screen, you should have an
option to Add a data file. When you select Add, you will get an option of
either the new version of a pst or the older 97 to 2002 version. Pick
whichever one you belive the pst to be. When you select ok, it should take
you to a location under your profile (..\Local\Microsoft\Outlook) and you may
see something like archive.pst. Select this file then select OK. You should
get another window where you can just select OK. You'll return to the first
screen then click Ok if that is an option, if not just close. Check your
folder list and you should see your archive folder.

Hope this help out.

Sincerely,
Tom Z Jr

You're still double clicking on the file instead of using File-> Open->
Outlook Data File... from within Outlook.

Opening any backed up pst-files is the same process.

I am having exactly the same problem as Jodie. I archived all folders today
(17/11/08) from 1 april 08 - 18 august 08. Afterwards I checked the archive
folder, but it was empty. I searched my c drive throught to
outlook/archive.pst and got an onscreen message saying I didn't have the
software required to view it, but I could purchase this online. I followed
the instructions as laid out in Roberts reply. This took me back to the
archive folders in outlook which are empty. I have tried every variation on
the process that I can think of but I cannot find my emails. I am not double
clicking anything. I am opening the files in outlook as specified.I need to
be able to access my archived emails. Where are they? Please help.

You check your archive options to determine the name/path of the archive
file. Then you open that archive within Outlook - File>Open>Data
File.....browse to it -
If the mail doesnt appear, check the View for this folder

And have the emails disappeared from your current pst file, or are they
still there? If the archive file is empty, then either nothing was archived
(i.e. the data is still in your current pst file) or you have opened the
wrong archive file...

I can't believe that you have to go through all this just to retrieve
archived emails. Why would you ever want to archive anything if you can't
get them back just as EASILY as it was to SEND THEM AWAY? If one push of one
button to answer one question makes your emails get archived, then retrieving
them should take one push of one button in answer to one question.
When did it become common practice for the USER to have to be a PROGRAMMER
to get anything done?

It is just as easy. Keep your Archive PSTs in your profile and showing in the
Navigation Pane.
