If its a wav file
EITHER change the setting in TOOLS>OPTIONS>GENERAL - "Link sounds with file
size greater than" to 50000 and then insert the sound. (Wont work on sounds
already inserted)
OR Add the sound as a transition sound (In the slide transition pane - sound
drop down , scroll right down to other sound.)
If its an mp3 download CDex (free) and use it to add a wav header file
(CONVERT > ADD A RIFF WAV HEADER TO MP2/MP3) This will fool powerpoint into
thinking its a wav and then proceed as above
Download CDex : http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos

Did that answer the question / help?

As John said: in CDEX, open the Convert menu, click on Add RIFF wave header
or something like this (at the bottom of the windows), find your MP3 and
click on OK
Now you can insert and embed in PPT your pseudo MP3 which appears as a wav
file
