I am trying to print a powerpoint presentation in a format I used on an
earlier pp version--3 slides on a page with blank lines to the side of each
for note taking by the audience. I can't seem to find that option in the
2002. Does it exist? If so, how do I do it? Thanks.

In addition to the ways Bill suggested, there is also a three-up HANDOUT
setting that prints lines for notes. This is built into PowerPoint and may
be what you remember.
