I created a dozen different subsites and I want my users to have the ability
to create their own master pages and apply it to their own subsite. I did a
test and had them create the masterpage in sharepoint designer and save it to:
Site Settings->Galleries->Master Pages
That works great. However when they go to:
Look and Feel -> Master page ->
Site Master Page
"Specify a master page to be used by this site and all sites that inherit
from it."
Then select from the drop down
Their masterpages don't show up. the only masterpages that show up are the
ones at the root of the site.
Is there a way around this? I don't want to give them permission to the root
of the site for fear they will overwrite each other's files.

Once your master page is created in SPD, right click the master page in
Folder List pane and click Set as Default Master page or Set as Custom
master page.

Thanks and I wish it were that easy.
The problem is my subsite master pages do not display in the drop down list.
The only master pages that show in the list are on the root level.

I am not talking in the Site. Open the SPD. Go to your site, open the
_catalogs/masterpage of your subsite. Right click your masterpage and choose
set it as default or custom master page.

Every site that you create have a copy of the master page that you can
customized, you can find it under _catalogs/masterpage folder include in each
site.
I hope this will be helpfull

We can find a master page in a subsite, but the how can we inherit the
master page which is already customized in the parent site. I dont want to
customise it again or recreate the page again.
is it possible for a subsite to use the already customised page in parent site
