  Question
I was asked to create a site below our top site and now I was told they want
to be able to access this via the internet WITHOUT having to go to the main
site then click on a link or tab.
In other words, can someone on the internet browse to
http://subsite.ourdomain.com and have it go to our internal site of
http://server/subsite?
Alt access mappings only show default and internet sites not subsites.

You would need to create a new site collection for this to be secure.
