You should go with your last option, that is, "Open site" to NLB address,
which I assume is what you mean by serverSP, then any modifications are
saved to the SQL content databases, and therefore accessible no matter which
Web front-end server responses to your requests.
SharePoint Designer (SPD) should never be used to save files to Web
front-end servers, that is, you should never open a single file from the
file system with SPD, say from the 12 hive, and save it back.
