It depends on how sharepoint was installed actually. If, during install,
you chose to do the typical or basic install, then sharepoint installed a
free version of SQL (WSS version 2 uses WMSDE, version 3 uses SSEE, or SQL
Server 2005 Embedded Edition) that has several limitations but is perfectly
adequate for a small to medium business to use sharepoint. In that case the
content database would be located on the same server as sharepoint (where
exactly depends on which version of sharepoint you are using, which I think
you never mentioned).
-- and to be thorough, if you are using WSS version 3, then you can also do
a standalone installation that is essentially a basic installation, so it
also uses the free SSEE database engine locally.--
If during install you chose server farm as your configuration, then you
would need to specify a pre-existing installation of SQL (either SQL 2005
express, or SQL Server 2000 sp4a or 2005) to put your content database.
This means that the content database would be wherever that installation of
SQL is.
In otherwords-- the content database where your sharepoint data is stored
could be on the same server as sharepoint, or it could be on an SQL server
on your network depending on how you chose to install sharepoint.
I know this doesn't seem like the simplest answer, but welcome to
sharepoint.

callahan,
First of all, thank you for the thorough answer. I know that I chose the
tyical installation and accepted all defaults.
I am using version 3... however, I just want to be sure where my data goes
when everytime anyone or even myself uploads a file on that site. Is there a
place where I can double check? A setting.. a preference?
I definitely appreciate your help.
Cheers!
Esfan.
